FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The European Union and Britain have reached an agreement on Gibraltar’s status, resolving a long-standing dispute over border controls between Spain and the British territory.

Gibraltar, a British enclave on Spain’s southern coast since the 18th century, has been a point of contention since the U.K. voted for Brexit in 2016. Negotiations over its border rules have continued since Britain formally exited the EU in 2020.

In a statement, the British Foreign Office said the agreement safeguards U.K. sovereignty and military autonomy while supporting Gibraltar’s economic future.

The deal will also ease border crossings by eliminating what officials described as “burdensome checks” and long wait times.

“I am pleased that we have finalized a political agreement that will bring legal certainty to the people of Gibraltar, their businesses, and those across the region who rely on border stability,” Gibraltar Prime Minister Fabian Picardo said.
