An unusual late‑season snowfall covered the Troodos mountains overnight and into Tuesday morning, creating a rare winter scene in early May.
Meteorological officer Andreas Chrysanthou said he does not recall May snowfall during his time at the department, noting that while records show it has happened before, the phenomenon is extremely rare. He described the cold spell as a “strong winter intrusion.”
Residents and visitors who made it to the mountains said they were surprised by the conditions, calling the scene “magical” and noting that many had not managed to visit Troodos during the winter months.
Some said it felt like Christmas, while others remarked on the unusual contrast of planning to travel from snow‑covered peaks down to the Limassol coast on the same day.
The cold spell is expected to ease in the coming days, with temperatures returning to seasonal levels by the weekend.
