Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Thursday underscored the importance of the United States‑Mexico‑Canada Agreement ahead of her meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Washington on Friday. The leaders are set to meet on the sidelines of the 2026 World Cup draw.

Speaking at the National Palace, Sheinbaum said the free trade pact “is very important for the three countries” and “guarantees this region’s competitiveness in the world.”

Her remarks followed Trump’s threat to let the USMCA expire and pursue a new deal with Mexico and Canada, despite the treaty being scheduled for review in 2026.

“There is enormous economic integration between the three countries, particularly between Mexico and the United States,” Sheinbaum said. “Separating that integration causes many problems … staying together is very important for the region, for our people and our nations.”
