Morocco’s Atlas Mountains are expected to see unusually heavy snowfall this week, with accumulations forecast to exceed those in Europe, according to weather reports.
Meteorologists said a series of low‑pressure systems carrying cold air will hit North Africa, creating conditions for dense snow across the Middle and High Atlas ranges.
The system, named Emilia, has already brought snow to Spain’s Canary Islands and is now moving toward Morocco.
The first wave of snowfall is expected December 14, followed by a second between December 16‑17, which could significantly increase snow depth.
Models suggest total accumulation in some Moroccan mountain areas may surpass levels recorded in the Alps and other European ranges.
Experts attribute the phenomenon to the strong orographic effect of the Atlas, whose peaks rise above 4,000 meters, amplifying precipitation when cold air masses arrive.
Authorities warned of possible flash floods in low‑lying areas due to snowmelt and heavy rain, though desert regions are expected to remain largely unaffected.
Officials said they are closely monitoring the situation, citing potential risks for safety and transport in mountain communities.
