Morocco Tops North Africa in Energy Sovereignty Index

Morocco ranked ahead of Egypt and Tunisia in Greenpeace’s latest energy sovereignty index, scoring 5.5 out of 10 thanks to heavy investment in solar and wind projects.

The report measured clean energy use, local control of resources, access, and policy independence.

It credited Morocco’s strategic planning and renewable rollout, which now supply about 20% of national electricity.

Researcher Amin Bennouna said true sovereignty depends not only on renewables but also on reducing imports.

Morocco still relies heavily on fossil fuels, particularly coal and oil, with limited domestic gas and oil output.

Renewables currently cover about 10% of Morocco’s overall energy needs and 26% of electricity demand, placing the country ahead of its North African peers.

Greenpeace noted Morocco’s ambition to become a regional hub for clean energy and green hydrogen, but warned that cutting dependence on imports remains a key challenge.
