FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Mount Etna, Europe’s most active volcano, erupted Monday morning, sending lava and a massive ash cloud several kilometers into the air.

Tremors from the eruption were felt in towns and villages across Sicily, local media reported. Authorities raised the alert level at Vincenzo Bellini Airport in Catania, but flights were not disrupted.

The eruption intensified into a lava fountain, with powerful and nearly continuous explosions, according to Corriere della Sera. Despite the dramatic display, officials said there was no danger to the population, as the volcanic activity remained far from inhabited areas.

Mount Etna, which erupts frequently, last saw significant activity in 2024. Authorities continue to monitor the situation.
