Namibia’s former president has died

Sam Nujoma, who became Namibia’s first president after independence in 1990, has died. He was 95 years old.

Nujoma was a guerrilla leader and took over the country when it became independent from South Africa.

“Our founder lived a long and significant life in which he served the people of his beloved country in an exceptional way,” says a statement from the president’s office.
