About 20% of pupils in Cyprus schools have a migrant background and do not speak Greek as their first language.

Ministry of Education data for the current school year show 10,113 pupils fall into this category.

Teachers unions say progress has been made in recent years, with pupils now taught Greek as a second language through a dedicated programme.

They added that ensuring proper support for pupils with a migrant background is essential for their integration and academic progress.
