Opinion: Seat Belt Enforcement in Cyprus Should Be Routine

FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The police campaign to enforce seat belt and child seat regulations last week was a commendable step toward saving lives on the road.

With 52.5% of traffic fatalities between 2021 and 2023 involving unbuckled drivers or passengers, the need for such measures is painfully clear.

However, while a weeklong focus on this issue is valuable, road safety should never be treated as a one-time initiative—it demands consistent, everyday attention.

Seat belts are not just a personal choice; they are a collective responsibility.

Every life lost due to a simple failure to buckle up is a tragedy that could have been avoided. Awareness campaigns and intensified checks are critical tools, but their impact diminishes when they are confined to short time frames. Routine enforcement would reinforce the importance of seat belt use, embedding it into the culture of road safety rather than leaving it as a fleeting priority.

Public outreach is another key component that must endure beyond the campaign.

Informing citizens about the life-saving benefits of seat belts and child seats should be an ongoing effort, woven into community events, schools, and media.

The police initiative last week was a step in the right direction, but it should serve as a starting point, not a stand-alone measure.
