Paris residents voted on Sunday to make 500 streets car-free, removing 10,000 parking spaces in favor of greener spaces.
Two-thirds of voters—66 percent—supported the plan proposed by the Social Democratic city council, according to Reuters, though participation was notably low, with just over 4 percent of eligible voters casting ballots.
For the first time, 16- and 17-year-olds were eligible to participate in the referendum, which was open to the city’s nearly 1.4 million registered voters, DPA news agency reported.
While 220 streets are already car-free, the council has not yet specified which additional streets among the city’s more than 6,000 will be affected by this new policy.
The decision signals a significant step toward a greener and more pedestrian-friendly Paris.
