Government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis issued a written statement to mark World Press Freedom Day, saying that press freedom is not a symbolic observance but a constant democratic requirement.
He said the Republic of Cyprus, as a European state governed by the rule of law, protects and works to strengthen the environment in which journalism can carry out its mission.
Letymbiotis added that the government views criticism as an integral part of democratic life and noted that disagreement, when expressed with evidence and responsibility, strengthens public dialogue.
He concluded that safeguarding press freedom in Cyprus is not only an institutional obligation but also a political stance, a European principle and a democratic duty.
