FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Two of the three regions of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef have suffered record coral losses over the past year due to widespread bleaching, researchers said this week.
The annual decline in coral cover in the northern and southern sections of the reef is the largest since monitoring began 39 years ago, according to the Australian Institute of Marine Research.
The Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest living ecosystem, spans 2,400 kilometers along the coast of Queensland in northeastern Australia.
