Registered unemployment in Cyprus fell slightly in January on a seasonally adjusted basis, while year‑on‑year figures showed a broader decline across several sectors, the Statistical Service said Thursday.

The number of people registered as unemployed at district labour offices stood at 12,650 at the end of January, up from 11,901 in December. After seasonal adjustment, unemployment eased to 9,848, compared with 9,863 the previous month.

Compared with January 2025, registered unemployment dropped by 497 people, or 3.8%. The agency said the decline was mainly linked to lower joblessness in construction, accommodation and food services, trade, manufacturing and among new entrants to the labour market.

Accommodation and food services remained the largest category of registered jobseekers, with 4,607 people, followed by trade with 1,781 and professional, scientific and technical activities with 842. Manufacturing accounted for 510 unemployed, while construction recorded 395.

Seasonally adjusted unemployment has remained below 10,200 since October, continuing a gradual downward trend from early 2024, when the figure exceeded 11,600.

The Statistical Service noted that comparisons with earlier years may be affected by changes introduced in 2021, when automatic renewals of unemployment registrations were discontinued and an online platform was launched for new applications and renewals.
