South Korea’s national police chief Cho Ji-ho was arrested on Wednesday night on charges of sedition, Yonhap news agency reported.

Cho is accused of using the police to deny members of parliament access to parliament after the president declared martial law on December 3.

Large parts of the National Assembly succeeded in coming together and declared the state of emergency illegal and lifted it.

Former South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, who is accused of a role in the martial law case, has attempted to commit suicide in custody, a Justice Ministry official told parliament, Reuters reports.

Meanwhile, several police operations are underway on Wednesday in connection with the state of emergency case, including a search of the office of President Yoon Suk-yeol.

According to the Yonhap news agency, the premises of both the national police and the police in the capital region, as well as the National Assembly’s security department, are also being searched.

President Yoon is being investigated by both the corruption bureau and the police because he declared martial law last week.

The state of emergency was quickly lifted, and over the weekend the opposition in the National Assembly attempted to impeach him. I
