FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The U.S. State Department has notified employees that layoff notices will be issued soon, as part of a broad downsizing and restructuring initiative aimed at reducing the federal government’s footprint.
Deputy Secretary for Management and Resources Michael Rigas described the move as part of the department’s largest reorganization in decades. In a statement Thursday, Rigas said affected staff will be informed directly.
According to an updated reorganization plan, the department is now proposing an 18% staff reduction — an increase from the 15% cut first announced in April. The revised plan also includes additional program eliminations beyond those previously proposed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
