The vanishing wetland of Akrotiri—A crisis ignored

The Akrotiri wetland, a cherished natural habitat in Cyprus, faces a dire threat from human negligence.

Recent warnings underscore the alarming consequences of increased freshwater volumes and rampant illegal dumping.

This degradation not only compromises the ecological balance but also signals a broader failure in environmental stewardship.

Critics highlight the indifference and inaction of services, despite clear evidence of rainwater problems and sewage leaks into the salt lake.

The presence of canes choking the habitat leaves scant space for the once-thriving bird population. Flamingos, once numbering in the thousands, have dwindled to a mere hundred.

This environmental tragedy unfolds as local authorities, state services, and even the British bases, convene yet seem impotent in their response.

We must not allow Akrotiri’s wetland, a symbol of natural beauty and ecological importance, to become a casualty of our neglect. The time to act is now, before this invaluable habitat is lost forever.
