More than 50,000 people demonstrated in Budapest on Saturday to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government after revelations of abuse in child welfare institutions.
The protest was called by opposition leader Péter Magyar, who said scandals over the past two years show a lack of oversight in facilities meant to protect minors.
Magyar, leading in polls ahead of parliamentary elections next spring, urged the rally after new allegations at a juvenile detention center already under scrutiny.
On Friday, he released a 2021 government report that found more than one‑fifth of children in public institutions had suffered abuse.
