Floodwaters reached rooftops and submerged vehicles in parts of Thai Nguyen province, about 80 kilometers north of the capital, leaving thousands stranded and forcing many to flee their homes.
Since Monday, eight people have died and five remain missing due to flooding and landslides in northern Vietnam, the Ministry of Environment said Wednesday.
State media reported that from late Tuesday into Wednesday, three rivers in the region recorded their highest flood levels in nearly 40 years.
