FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Major General Tom Bewick was sworn in as the new Sovereign Base Areas Administrator during a ceremony at Flagstaff House in Episkopi on April 11.

Bewick also takes on the role of Commander British Forces Cyprus, bringing nearly three decades of Army service since joining in 1996.

“It is an honor and a privilege to assume the role of Administrator of the Sovereign Base Areas,” he said. “Cyprus is a wonderful place to be, and we’ve got an important set of jobs to do. The United Kingdom’s relationship with the Republic of Cyprus has been flourishing in recent years, as evidenced by a historic visit by our prime minister. I’m looking forward to helping that cooperation reach new heights.”

Bewick, a seasoned soldier with worldwide deployments, acknowledged global challenges and emphasized the importance of regional collaboration.

“We live in an increasingly unstable world,” he said. “Whether in the face of economic disharmony, rising migration or conflict, it is more important than ever for like-minded partners to come together in common cause. Within the region, the Republic of Cyprus and United Kingdom have played pivotal roles in addressing risks to ourselves and our allies.”

He also praised his team and expressed eagerness to work with various stakeholders.

“I’m really looking forward to working with all components of our community, whether UK military personnel, British Forces Cyprus personnel, the SBA Administration, the High Commission, the Republic of Cyprus or our allies and partners here on the island and regionally,” he said.

Bewick shared personal reflections on his new post, noting the enthusiasm of his family.

“I’ve got a big smile on my face. My family does too,” he said. “I think they are happier than I am, if that were possible. We are very pleased to be here and excited to make the most of all this wonderful island has to offer.”
