Turkey’s environmental protection spending rose 108.3 percent in 2024 from the previous year, reaching 441 billion lira (about $8.8 billion), according to data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute.
Financial and non-financial corporations accounted for 60.9 percent of total expenditures, while 31.2 percent came from general government and nonprofit institutions serving households. Households made up the remaining 7.9 percent.
Waste management services represented the largest share at 58.8 percent, followed by wastewater management at 16.5 percent. Biodiversity and landscape protection accounted for 9.4 percent, soil and water conservation for 7.4 percent, air and climate protection for 1.7 percent, and other environmental activities for 6 percent.
Environmental protection investment spending climbed 114.2 percent year over year to 82 billion lira (about $1.6 billion). Corporations were responsible for 80 percent of that investment, with the rest coming from government and nonprofit institutions.
Environmental spending accounted for 0.99 percent of Turkey’s gross domestic product in 2024, up from 0.78 percent in 2023.
