The total bed capacity of accommodation facilities licensed by Turkey’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism reached 1,939,125 as of August, official figures show.
There are 21,608 facilities nationwide holding a tourism operation licence, a tourism investment licence or a basic accommodation tourism operation licence. Together they have 928,638 rooms.
Some 8,768 facilities with tourism operation licences account for 596,643 rooms and 1,255,744 beds. A further 455 facilities with tourism investment licences have 54,434 rooms and 122,218 beds, while 12,385 basic accommodation facilities offer 277,561 rooms and 561,163 beds.
Antalya has the largest bed capacity of any province, with 654,133 beds across 2,764 facilities. This equates to about 33.7% of the national total, meaning roughly one in three licensed beds in Turkey is in the Mediterranean resort province.
Istanbul is second with 272,731 beds, followed by Muğla with 243,256, Izmir with 94,936 and Aydın with 58,675. The capital Ankara has 42,249 beds.
By number of facilities, Istanbul leads with 3,192, ahead of Antalya with 2,764.
The ministry also awards an “environmentally friendly facility” certificate to businesses that protect nature, save energy and water, reduce and recycle waste and adopt sustainability principles.
There are 428 such certified facilities in Turkey, with a combined 132,241 rooms and 284,507 beds.
Antalya again tops the list, accounting for 68.6% of the certified bed capacity with 217 facilities, 89,058 rooms and 195,206 beds.
Istanbul follows with 57 facilities and 25,927 beds, then Muğla with 43 facilities and 22,036 beds, and Izmir with 28 facilities and 11,354 beds. Ankara has 19 certified facilities with 6,684 beds.
