Türkiye recently announced a 15 percent increase in transit fees for international vessels navigating the strategic Turkish Straits, which connect the Mediterranean Sea to the Black Sea. The new rate of 5.83 U.S. dollars per ton took effect on July 1.

The updated fees apply to vessels transiting the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul and the Dardanelles Strait in northwestern Türkiye, with charges based on net tonnage.

This increase is aimed at supporting the sustainability of public services in the Turkish Straits.

According to ministry data, 51,058 transit vessels passed through the Bosphorus and Dardanelles in 2024, generating 227.4 million dollars in revenue.

The Bosphorus Strait, which runs through Istanbul, stretches nearly 30 kilometers and narrows to 700 meters at its tightest point, serving as a vital passage linking the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara.
