The Akcakale border crossing in southeastern Türkiye’s Sanliurfa province reopened Tuesday, ending a 12‑year closure, private broadcaster A Haber reported.

Activity was high from early morning, with passport checks underway and security measures tightened. The crossing lies opposite the Syrian town of Tal Abyad.

Provincial authorities announced Monday that passport‑based entry and exit procedures would resume Tuesday. The crossing had been closed to civilian and commercial traffic since 2014 amid Syria’s internal conflict, reopening partially in 2019 for trade, funerals and official travel after a Turkish military operation.

The latest move fully restores civilian access, making Akcakale the sixth operational crossing along Türkiye’s 900‑kilometer border with Syria, much of which has remained restricted since the war began in 2011.
