UN Secretary-General António Guterres praised Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado on Friday, calling her a symbol of global efforts to protect democracy.
Guterres said the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Machado honors those working to uphold civil and political rights at a time when democratic institutions face growing threats worldwide.
He described Machado as a “champion for democracy” and emphasized the importance of recognizing individuals who fight for freedom and the rule of law.
