UN Secretary‑General António Guterres met Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman at UN headquarters on Wednesday, the first meeting between the two since Erhürman’s election.
According to a statement from the Turkish Cypriot side, the talks were held in a positive atmosphere and focused on current and regional developments, with the Cyprus issue at the centre of discussions.
Erhürman presented Guterres with his four‑point methodology for restarting negotiations, along with his position that what he described as the “unjust and unlawful isolation” of Turkish Cypriots should be lifted without delay. He also briefed the Secretary‑General on recent developments concerning confidence‑building measures.
The Turkish Cypriot leader was accompanied by “Deputy Minister to the Presidency” Mehmet Dana, the “TRNC Representative” in New York, Ambassador Murat Soğusel, and his “Diplomacy and Foreign Relations Adviser” Ipek Borman.
Erhürman is due to return to the island on Thursday evening and will hold a news conference at Ercan airport to outline his assessment of the meeting.
