The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said Friday that Israeli airstrikes and an armed incident targeting peacekeepers in southern Lebanon violated a key UN resolution.
Peacekeepers observed Israeli airstrikes Thursday afternoon in the villages of Marounah, Majadel and Baraashit, while the Lebanese Armed Forces conducted operations to control unauthorized weapons and infrastructure, UNIFIL said in a statement.
“These actions are clear violations of Resolution 1701,” the statement said, urging the Israel Defense Forces to use established coordination mechanisms and warning Lebanese authorities against any escalation.
Later Thursday night, six men on three mopeds approached UN peacekeepers near Bint Jbeil, with one firing three shots at the back of a UN vehicle. No injuries were reported.
UNIFIL called on Lebanese officials to protect peacekeepers and investigate the incident.
