US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected in Athens this afternoon, at a time of intense geopolitical developments, with the conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine still unresolved.
Of particular interest is that Rubio, on one of his rare trips outside the United States, is breaking with State Department tradition by not pairing his visit to Greece with a stop in Turkey. The move points to the independent footing of Greek-US relations, separate from the Greek-Turkish context.
The United States consistently backs the 3+1 format of Greece, Cyprus, Israel and the US, and has expressed support for all connectivity projects in the Eastern Mediterranean.
