Today in 1937, the travel experts of the popular periodical The Sphere advised readers that the best route to Cyprus was by train to Trieste and thence by the Lloyd Triestino boat which left every Wednesday at 13.00 and arrives at Larnaca on Sunday at 14.00. It continued:

The 2nd-class fare with out sleeper was 6 pounds, whilst the 1st-class fare on the boat costs £22, tourist £9 5s.

If you wish to avoid a long train journey, you may travel either by the Prince Line from London, the Moss Hutchinson Line from Liverpool or Glasgow, or the Khedivial Line from Marseilles.

All these lines however go via Alexandria, and the passage from England takes approximately 24 days, calling at such places as Malta, Beirut, and Haifa on the way.

Nicosia, the capital, is a convenient centre from which to explore the island but if you want to be near the sea we would recommend Kyrenia which is 16 miles from Nicosia, and noted for its bathing.

There is quite a large English colony in Cyprus, with social clubs and golf courses. April is the best month.
