WITH sweat streaming from his lean frame despite the February chill, Jackie Brown loped up to a waiting crowd at Kyrenia Gate, Nicosia, on this day in 1960 to win the Kyrenia-Nicosia road run in one hour, 35 minutes and nine seconds.
They call 34-year-old Jack, a civilian, the ‘Iron Man of Cyprus Athletics’.
His feat showed just how true the title was!
Later runners staggered in, worn out by the exacting route of winding climbing road- a route which Jackie himself called “a 15-mile equivalent to a marathon.”
But Jack made it look so easy.
A few seconds after finishing he was chatting comfortably to his wife Betty and 11-year-old son Malcom, who were there to see him in.
