FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE — Employment in Cyprus’ broad public sector reached 77,034 in the first quarter of 2025, according to the Statistical Service.
General government employment totaled 72,072, while publicly owned enterprises and companies employed 4,962 people. Within general government, employment was distributed as follows: 55,243 in government, 11,248 in non-profit organizations, and 5,581 in local authorities.
Compared to the same quarter in 2024, public sector employment increased by 1,311 people, a rise of 1.7 percent. Central government employment grew by 1,026 people (1.6 percent), while local authorities saw a significant increase of 1,117 people (25 percent). Employment in publicly owned enterprises and companies declined by 832 people (14.4 percent), largely due to the transfer of sewerage and water boards to newly established district local government organizations in July 2024.
Compared to the fourth quarter of 2024, public sector employment rose by 197 people (0.3 percent). Central government employment increased by 260 people (0.4 percent), while local authorities saw a slight decline of 59 people (1 percent). Employment in publicly owned enterprises and companies remained stable.
