FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Maria Angela Holguín, the personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General, reaffirmed that the framework for resolving the Cyprus issue remains a bizonal, bicommunal federation, as endorsed by the UN Security Council.
However, she acknowledged that since the collapse of talks at Crans-Montana, this model no longer serves as a shared reference point between the two sides.
In an interview with the newspaper *Politis*, Holguín noted that four years after the informal “5+1” meeting, the positions of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides remain far apart. “This reality must be acknowledged,” she said, “because it takes two to tango.”
She emphasized that her mission, as defined by the Secretary-General, is to help both sides move forward step by step—building trust and seeking common ground for the future.
