FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Prison conditions and chronic overcrowding are a top priority for the Ministry of Justice and Public Order, which is working with urgency and consistency to implement measures aimed at strengthening and modernizing the work of the Department of Prisons, the ministry said in a statement Monday.
The statement responds to recent media reports and data published in the Council of Europe’s Annual Penal Statistics released on July 15, 2025, covering prison populations between January 2023 and January 2024.
The ministry noted that the report covers only a limited timeframe and does not reflect broader government actions taken since early 2024 to resolve overcrowding, including policy developments that are underway.
