FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – A devastating wildfire that tore through Limassol district was the result of arson, Cyprus’s Chief Fire Officer Nikos Longinos confirmed.

Speaking on state radio, Longinos revealed eyewitnesses had spotted flames erupting from two separate locations just 100 metres apart—both beneath a bridge used as an illegal dumping site. The incident has now been handed over to police for investigation.

Longinos strongly rejected claims of delays, insisting a fully staffed fire engine arrived at the scene just six minutes after the emergency call came in. He emphasised the situation remains extremely difficult, with multiple fronts still active and firefighters battling round the clock.
