FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Cyprus’s Energy Ministry reported significant progress Wednesday in restoring electricity to fire-affected communities, with Minister Giorgos Papastasiou stating that 80% of areas are expected to be reconnected by the weekend, either through standard grid access or temporary generators.

Speaking after a Cabinet meeting, Papastasiou said full power has already been restored to several villages, including Agios Georgios Sylikou, Alassa, Lofou, Mallia, and Ypsonas. More than 150 Cyprus Electricity Authority (EAC) workers are deployed in remote and rugged terrain, working under extreme heat. The minister publicly thanked them, calling them “heroes in the field.”

He added that the ministry has secured the necessary equipment to repair the damaged infrastructure and is actively supporting recovery efforts on the ground
