The U.N. peacekeeping mission in Lebanon on Friday handed over a cleared minefield to the Lebanese army near the Blue Line in the country’s southeast.

UNIFIL said it was the first such transfer “since last year’s hostilities.”

The demining operation covered nearly 2,000 square meters and began on Aug. 12, concluding earlier this month in coordination with the Lebanese army.

Peacekeepers found 393 mines, which were destroyed on site, the mission said.

UNIFIL said more cleared minefields are expected to be handed over in the coming period.

Demining operations in southern Lebanon resumed after nearly two years of interruption due to hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah along the Blue Line, the border demarcation established by the United Nations in 2000.
