Cyprus cabinet approves voting rights change for children of displaced mothers

Cyprus’s cabinet has approved an amendment to the Civil Registry Law that will allow people displaced through their mother’s side to vote in local government elections based on both their place of residence and their place of displacement — the same rights already granted to those displaced through their father’s side.

Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou said the decision fulfils a pledge made by President Christodoulides to extend equal electoral rights to individuals displaced through their mothers.

He clarified that when both parents are displaced, registration will automatically be based on the father’s place of displacement.

The new rules will take effect for the 2029 local government elections.
