A Cypriot communist organization marched to the U.S. Embassy in Nicosia on Sunday, calling for the closure of all foreign military bases on the island as regional tensions continue to rise.
The Cyprus Communist Initiative said its main demands include shutting down every foreign base in Cyprus, withdrawing all foreign troops and ending military cooperation between the Republic of Cyprus, the United States and Israel.
The demonstration comes as foreign bases on the island — including British sovereign bases and facilities used by U.S. and allied forces — have drawn renewed attention amid the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
Several regional powers have used Cypriot airspace or nearby waters for surveillance, humanitarian corridors or military coordination, prompting domestic debate over Cyprus’ role in the crisis.
Organizers said the march was intended to send a message that Cyprus should not be drawn into regional military operations.
