The British Bases are seeking to install a new cluster of 32 antennas at Akrotiri, a project that would require the expropriation of roughly 340 skales of land.
In an effort to ease public concern over possible health effects, base authorities have offered to install three electromagnetic‑radiation monitors and to release the readings — along with findings from an environmental study — to the public.
The request has already been submitted to the relevant committee, chaired by Kourion Mayor Pantelis Georgiou.
Speaking to CyBC radio, Georgiou said he opposes the installation and made clear that the municipality will take legal action to halt the project. He added that he has asked the Health Ministry for updated epidemiological data for the wider area.
The foreign and interior ministers have been briefed on the developments.
