Authorities in Cyprus will begin intensified inspections to curb illegal activity linked to Easter bonfires, with arrests and possible penalties for parents of minors involved in offenses, the justice minister has said.

Justice and Public Order Minister Costas Fytiris said after a meeting with local authorities, police and the fire service that the goal is to ensure the traditional “lampratzia” bonfires remain a celebration rather than a danger to young people and the public.

He said a coordinated plan will be implemented with municipalities, communities, police and firefighters to prevent problems during the holiday period.

Fytiris added that inspections and enforcement actions will begin immediately to limit risky behavior and ensure the custom is observed safely.

The ministry said in a statement that municipalities and communities have designated contact points for direct communication with police and the fire service to ensure faster response where needed.
