A reference to displaced Cypriots has been included in an amendment incorporated into the final text of the European Parliament’s draft report on the EU’s 2028–2034 multiannual financial framework, which was approved by the legislature’s Budget Committee.
The amendment, submitted by DISY MEP Michalis Hadjipantela, cites Protocol No. 10 on Cyprus, noting that the application of the European Union acquis is suspended in areas of the Republic of Cyprus where the government does not exercise effective control.
The text highlights that this situation has for decades prevented lawful property owners from accessing, using or enjoying their land, referring to property rights protected under Article 17 of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.
