On this day in 1959, over 50 Armenians, former Palestinian refugees, who fled to Cyprus after the troubles there, emigrated to the USA.
It was reported that more Armenians would be leaving the Island under a scheme which applied to Palestinian immigrants.
The sponsor was George Mardikian, whose efforts for their rehabilitation has earned him international respect. He was chairman of the American National Committee of Homeless Armenians.
One of the Committee’s main accomplishments was the immigration of over 4,000 Aгmenian refugees from Germany who had fled from the Soviet Union, after World War Two.
