A massive bomb hoax disrupted schools across Cyprus on Tuesday, prompting a major police operation.

The drama started at 7am when Police announced they were informed of threatening messages and activated the Crisis Management Center at Police Headquarters.

At the same time, a so-called ‘Action Protocol’ was activated in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.

As the morning progressed, Police carried out checks at the schools where the threatening messages were received, while investigations were also carried out by the Electronic Crime Sub-Directorate to identify the source of hoax emails.

In addition to investigations on the ground in Cyprus, the assistance of Interpol and Europol was requested, while it was found that similar threatening messages had been sent to Hungary and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Police spokesperson Kyriaki Lambrianidou stated that the main source of the message was Russia.
