On this day in 1959, a fisherman from Famagusta made the biggest catch of his long career – a nine foot long shark.
The fisherman, Homas Psillos, was out preparing his nets at the Phaleron beach when he saw the shark.
It had come into shallow water, and was unable to move.
Thinking quickly, Psillos brought a truck to the beach and used it to pull the shark ashore with a rope.
While this was going on the shark revealed its gender, she gave birth to 20 baby sharks.
Note: One of the largest sharks ever caught in Cyprus was a spiny shark weighing 650 kg, also caught near the shores of Famagusta. This impressive catch was made in 2015!
