Police in Cyprus are awaiting reports from the fire department and the electromechanical services on the causes of the fire that broke out last Saturday in Limassol, resulting in the tragic death of a family of five.

In a radio broadcast, a police official said most likely cause of the fire is believed to be damage to the house’s electrical installation.

There is also a possibility that the fire started from a heater purchased in early January from a store in Limassol. Statements will be taken from the store managers as part of the investigation, reports CyBC.

The fire, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, claimed the lives of Bassem Adeeb Gamil Takla, 35, his wife Maria Georgiou, 33, and their three children, aged 7, 3, and 2.

The fire originated in the area between the kitchen and a small living room.

Despite the immediate intervention of firefighters, who arrived at the scene within minutes, the family was trapped inside their second-floor apartment and could not be saved. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities also examining whether an electrical fault or an electric heater plugged into a multi-socket extension may have triggered the blaze.
