Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides congratulated Friedrich Merz, leader of Germany’s Christian Democratic Union, following his party’s election victory.
In a post on X, Christodoulides wrote, “Congratulations Friedrich Merz for this important victory, at a critical moment for Europe, for our Union.”
Christodoulides recently met Merz last month at the Informal Conference of the European People’s Party in Berlin.
In the latest German election, the CDU secured 28.5% of the vote.
The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) achieved its best-ever result with 20%.
Incumbent Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) suffered a significant defeat, garnering only 16.5% of the vote.
The CDU is now set to form a new government, with Merz likely to become the next Chancellor.
