FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The Fire Department has issued a high alert, warning of an elevated risk of wildfires due to the dry season.

In a statement, officials urged the public to exercise caution and avoid activities that could spark fires.

This includes the use of heat-producing tools or agricultural machinery, and the disposal of lit cigarette butts in open areas.

Cyprus has a history of devastating wildfires.

One of the most significant incidents occurred in July 2021, when wildfires broke out near the village of Arakapas during a heatwave.

The fires spread throughout the Limassol District, resulting in the deaths of four people and extensive damage.

The 2021 Limassol wildfires were described as the worst in the country’s history, highlighting the ongoing challenges Cyprus faces in managing and preventing wildfires.
