FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has overtaken the conservative CDU/CSU bloc in a major national poll, marking the first time the AfD has emerged as the strongest party.

The Ipsos survey, conducted last weekend, revealed that the AfD gained three percentage points since March, reaching 25% support among potential voters.

The CDU/CSU bloc, led by Friedrich Merz, saw its support drop by five percentage points to 24%, its lowest rating in three years.

Ipsos attributed the decline to a loss of trust following a policy shift on debt policy during coalition negotiations.

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) remained steady at 15% support. The poll also highlighted public dissatisfaction with the outgoing coalition government led by Olaf Scholz.

The survey results come as the CDU/CSU and SPD reached an agreement on Wednesday to form a new federal government, aiming to address growing political challenges and voter discontent.
