FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE –  A new organization promoting cremation as an alternative to traditional burial recently launched in Larnaca, calling for the establishment of a centrally located crematorium by 2030.

The Cyprus Cremation Society, which opened free membership at its launch event, aims to tackle burial space concerns while offering more options for end-of-life arrangements.

Cyprus is one of only two European Union countries without cremation facilities, though an estimated 15% of its population of 1.8 million prefers this option, the group said.

The society noted that around 1,000 grave spaces each year are used by people who might have chosen cremation, if available.

With annual deaths in Cyprus expected to rise from 9,400 to 14,400 by 2030, pressure on the island’s burial infrastructure is projected to increase significantly.
