FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Opposition AKEL organized a protest and demonstration outside the Ministry of Finance over the weekend, demanding government action to address rising costs and green taxes.
The event aimed to advocate for relief measures for society and small-to-medium enterprises.
In his speech, AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou criticized the Christodoulides administration for celebrating economic progress while 130,000 citizens live below the poverty line.
He argued that while the economy is growing, the standard of living for a significant portion of the population remains stagnant, leaving many citizens anxious about their well-being.
Stefanou also called on the government to halt the implementation of green taxes scheduled for May, claiming they are not part of European policy.
He warned that if the government does not reconsider its decisions on this matter, AKEL will continue to oppose these measures.
