Leaders and representatives of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties met on Wednesday at the Ledra Palace Hotel in Nicosia for their regular bicommunal dialogue under the auspices of the Slovak Republic Embassy.
The meeting, hosted by the Democratic Party (DIKO), focused on the topic: “How the establishment of a global institution in Cyprus, under the umbrella of the United Nations, can contribute decisively to the resolution process on the island and reinforce the longevity of a future solution.”
Delegates exchanged views on the proposal, initially introduced in 2018 by former Member of the House of Representatives and the European Parliament, Takis Hadjigeorgiou, titled “An idea for Cyprus and the region.”
Participants recognized that establishing a global institution in Cyprus, aimed at peacebuilding and conflict resolution under the United Nations, could strengthen the sense of security for all Cypriots post-solution and reinforce its longevity.
Given Cyprus’s geopolitical position, such an institution could also offer stability in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.
The delegates noted that this initiative could positively impact the political, social, and economic development of Cyprus, enhancing its international reputation as a hub of peace and a platform for international dialogue. They agreed to invite Mr. Hadjigeorgiou to a sub-committee meeting to present his proposal in more detail, aiming to raise awareness of this idea.
The leaders called on all parties participating in the forthcoming multilateral meeting in Geneva to contribute constructively towards resuming negotiations to solve the Cyprus problem. The next meeting of the political party leaders and representatives will be held on March 26, 2025, with the Turkish Cypriot Democratic Party (DP) as the hosting party.
